How Twilight Ruined My Life.

I've had a few of you ask how we chose Skeeter's name.
Now, I still maintain that I won't post her real name on the blog.
But if you were to email me and ask I'd definitely tell you.

The name was actually one of the easiest parts of this whole baby thang for us.
Nothing like choosing bedding.  That nearly induced a hormonal meltdown.
The boy's name was chosen long before we thought about having a baby.
The girl's name was also chosen.

And then the Twilight series came along and ruined my life plans.

Ella.
That was the originally planned name.
It was short for my paternal Grandma's name.
It was feminine and original.
And it is now the #13 name for 2011.
I will not have people thinking that my child was caught up in the Twihard craze.
Especially when I've never read/watched it.
So, I had to nix it.

And we were back at the drawing board...
I started with a list.
Then I crossed off the names that were in the top 100.
I was/am adamant that the name not be overly common.
This is what I was left with*:

Clara
Cora
Maggie
Harper
Emmerson
Emmaline
Evelyn

The next part was super complicated.
You ready?
I handed the list to Mr. BUB and he chose.
It seriously took him 2 minutes.

We're using my Grandma's name for her middle name, so the sentimental meaning is still there.

The end.

*Skeeter's name is omitted from the list.

I totally get it. When I have a daughter, I wanted to name her Arabella. Twilight ruined anything "Bella" for me ...

I am laughing out loud at the part about it taking your husband 2 minutes... I'm super curious now as to what her real name is... & I agree with the not wanting an overly common name! But I have to say I have no idea who Emma is in Twilight? Mind you I've seen it twice & made fun of it the ENTIRE time through... lol!

Have a great rest of the week!!

Can't wait to find out her name :) I like how you chose, though!

Ugh so agree! It has definitely ruined Jacob and Bella/Ella for me. Not cool, I liked those names! Good method, though, for picking the alternative!

Stupid Twilight (even though I'm a fan) has ruined the name Bella/Ella, and they are both such beautiful names!! Can't wait to hear what little Skeeter's name is going to be :)!

That's too funny - DJ loves the nickname Issie so he wanted to name Baby J Isabel... yeah. same deal as Ella, the twihards ruined it and Isabella is like the number one baby name from 2011?!

So, we went back to the drawing board... luckily we figured out another a few weeks before we found out it was a girl! We're using DJs great grandmas name as our middle name too - I think it makes it so much more special when familial names are used!

Can't wait to find out her real name. Sorry Twilight ruined such a pretty name for you :(

there's not an Ella on Twilight, is there? I guess it's similar to Bella. That's so stupid- not your reasoning, but teh fact that people always think 'oh you must be a Twihard fan' psshhhh!!! I'd totally not pick that name for the same reason. Your name is much cuter anyway! :)

Well, I LOVVVVED the name Bella but noooo way will I name a baby that (not that I will be having any soon) thanks to Twilight!

PS.....I love Skeeters real name.
How did you come up with it? Or is it just a name you like? I think it goes perfect with mccain :)

Damnit Twilight!! It ruins everything.

Names are tricky...we definitely wanted something unique, too, but not something that would make my child hate me for having to correct everyone all the time.

ugh i feel you. i loved the name rosalie, and esmee, and then twilight bastardized them. and ill never to use them!
i want to know baby girls real name. though i do like the nickname skeeter :)

I love the name Ella and I don't care that it may be seen as a Twilight reference. :)

But ... I don't care about things like that ...

I also love the name Sophia even though everytime I hear it I think of a little old lady with a pocketbook always with her :) hehehehe

I wanna know her real name :)

I thought I had it figured out. That is until I saw the last line! All this name guessing lately is starting to become stressful.

I get it but I wouldn't think the name Ella was because of Twilight at all. Bella yea. But Ella is a really pretty name too. I think that's what they use as Cinderella's nickname, no?

We named our daughter after one of my best friends who passed away. Its so nice when the name has meaning and isnt just a trend.

Ps. I gave you the Versatile Award! http://hgifford.blogspot.com/2012/01/ooooh-award.html

I love the idea of using family names. That's what we plan on doing! Now I'm very curious about her name! :)

We'd always loved the name Isabella but now that it's trendy we don't want to use it. It's literally the only baby name we've ever agreed on, so it's a total bummer that it blew up like it did. Dang Twilight.

OK, I'm on the edge of my seat...what's Skeeter's real name?

Mateya said...

I wish choosing our name was that easy! You're pretty trusting of your husband, letting him choose!

Consider this my email...I'm dying to know her name?!

I can see not wanting your kid to have the same name as ten other kids in her class, but if I really loved a name I wouldn't change it because it was too popular at the time. All that matters is that it's meaningful to you. The again, I don't really get the insistence that people have for giving their kid a "unique" name, so I'm not a great authority on this. My sister was named after a song that was really popular at the time, and she rarely has anyone comment on that - people forget things over time, if that helps any...

I love all of those names! I definitely have a girls name picked out for whenever I have a baby!

And I agree, Twilight has ruined my life in a lot of ways too :(

I wanna know her name!! :)

Totally agree-- I love the name Ella but couldn't ever use it now. Damn Twilight!! And of course it only took him a few minutes-- such a man. Lol!

I wanna know the name!!! :)

I'm glad we've shared our "secret" girl's names with each other otherwise I'd be DYING! haha...I think it's so sweet that you're using your Grandma's name too! How funny that the name's been easier than bedding, huh? ;)

I have to admit that I named my pug Bella after reading the first book many years ago.
However I would never name my children after any famous characters or people.

I don't think I would ever put Ella with Twilight though

tara said...

Whew. Good thing you didn't name her Ella, cuz I plan on naming my future daughter Isabella Swan.

I love those names. Emmaline was on our list, but a friend went with Emmalynn that is due in April, so we went with another.

I love that it only took him a few minutes to pick. I've been wondering what her name was going to be, but didn't want to ask because I'd seen you hadn't announced it yet. I broke that rule, I wish someone would've told me that revealing your childs name was a no no.

Tea said...

The naming process for my name is similar to yours. I have a name of meaning (Margaret) after my aunt, who was the sister my mom was closest with. Then, my middle name, is an uncommon name (Tyana). I go by Tyana on a daily basis. Aside from having to teach everyone to say it when I introduce myself, I love it. I haven't met another one, and will be surprised if I do.

PS, I love Emmerson, Harper, and Emmaline! :) Can't wait for the reveal of the name!

PPS, your blog is probably one of my favorites to read! Always so funny! I shared the potassium text and have used it once or twice!

I want to know!! :) It worked out that both of my children's names are family names and are also very uncommon. I love that they are unique but also have a story. But here is where I am confused. Did Ella get popular because of Bella or was their an Ella in Twilight?

darn vampires, they always ruin it :)

i love all those names! i bet skeeter's is even better!

Picking a name is the hardest thing. I had my daughter's name picked out years before she was born too, but I know that it will never be as easy the second time around.
I love different names too. I'm sure her name will be beautiful!

lori said...

those are all cute names! i have a running name list on my phone so that when the time does come to pick a name... i have ideas and we wont be completely lost.

ella is one of my middle name choices, too... i like names that are commonly last names or names that can go for boy/girl... so i feel like the middle name has to be REALLY femimine or masculine so on paper, you know if its a boy or a girl.

Lil' Woman said...

Oooh now I'm curious to know....I'm sure whatever you chose is beautiful

I hate that! It's like when Rachel from Friends named hers Emma and that shot to number one. People need to think for themselves and not let pop culture name their baby! I’m with you on the not too common baby names. I also didn’t want too weird or misspelled. I had my heart set on Nolan and it was 95 when I named him. Now it’s in the 80s. Ugh! Milo is in the 400s, so we’re good there.

I don't think Bella with the name Ella... I always think of Ella Fitzgerald, who is one of my favorite jazz singers ever. I have loved her longer than Twilight has been around! Oh well!!

I love Skeeter's name :)

I love all those names on your list, so simple and pretty. But I love Skeeters name the most. But I'm going to call her La-A.

I actually feel really bad for all of the kids named because of Twilight. I also feel bad for all the little girls and boys this year that were named after the new royal couple.
