Book Club: Sweet Valley Confidential

Sweet Valley Confidential

So, I've mentioned before that I was a HUGE fan of the Sweet Valley Twins growing up.  I had a bookshelf full of the books and I could answer just about any question about Jessica & Elizabeth Wakefield.  So when I heard that a new book- tailored towards people MY age- was coming out, I was ecstatic.

You may have noticed that the book never made it to the "Currently Reading" section on my blog.  This is because I was reading the current book when SVC came in.  I dropped that book like it was hot and immediately dove into SVC.

First, the good... I read the book in 4 hours.  With distractions.  It kept me turning the pages and had an decent story line.

Now, the rest... I generally had a frown on my face while I flipped those pages.  Too much has changed!  I mean, I obviously realize that 10 years have passed since we last read about the girls, and I'm quite honestly not surprised by the direction some of the character's lives have taken.  But I guess I had more of a sugary sweet impression about everyone than what was portrayed in the book.

I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, so I won't tell you more than what is written on the cover of the book.  Jessica and Elizabeth are at odds.  Jessica betrayed Elizabeth in the worst way possible, and now the twins are feuding.  Elizabeth, normally the "good twin", decides to get revenge on Jessica.

It just doesn't work out to me that they would be at odds in the first place.  And honestly, after learning how badly Jessica betrayed Elizabeth, I don't honestly believe it could be worked out.  I guess I was hoping for more of a storyline where the girls worked together, like the old days.

It seriously pains me, but I can only give this book 3 stars.  I wanted to love it.  And I'll probably read it again, to give it a second chance. But it just didn't live up to my expectations.

I used to love the Sweet Valley High series. I even had the board game. OMG, now I want to go to my parents house and find that game!

I'm disappointed you didn't like it! I may still read it and see how I feel about it.

So, I've now read 100+ pages of the book and I totally agree with you. I find the whole premise a little outrageous. Elizabeth's "revenge plot" is so silly.

And I guess I didn't notice her lame writing when I was 12. Whey does she use "like" and "so" in the writing. For example-- "I was like so hurt by it." She should probably stick to writing for kids.

But apparently you and I are the only ones who didn't love it because it's flying off the shelves, and she's contemplating a 2nd "adult" book.

I'm sad that it wasn't as amazing as I remember the series to be. Oh well.
